We were still at the departure gate at Halifax airport, with flights booked from Halifax -> Frankfurt ; Frankfurt -> Munich. An email notified us that our Munich flight was cancelled (no reason given!). Oh no – do I need to cancel the hotel? How will we get there? Within the hour, we got a notification that were we rebooked on another flight that left just an hour later than originally planned. OK, that works!
We made it to Frankfurt at 6:30am Frankfurt time and were killing a few minutes at the Duty Free shop. The booze guy was trying his best to make a sale and started offering samples when we showed an interest in Scotch. Before we knew it, we were tasting McCallam 18yr single malt Scotch at a mere $675 Cdn per bottle. Then there was a gin made from Tuscany juniper and Bushmills 80/20 Irish Whiskey. If you can’t sleep you may as well have a few shots – WELCOME TO GERMANY!
After an abnormally long wait for our luggage [45 minutes at least] we made our way to the S8 train to take us Central Station, close to the hotel. We were stuck about 6 stops from Central Station, apparently due to a medical emergency up the line a few stops. Information was limited so we just sort of followed the crowd when they all shifted to the S1 train. Then a German announcement [not sure what he said] caused everyone to get up and go back to the original train. Anyways, we lost an hour but the train eventually started moving!
A nap , shower and then time for supper. Germany and Austria were under severe rainstorm warnings so we stuck pretty close to our hood. We shared a charcuturie plate and then I had veal schnitzel and a few beers at a great spot called Münchner Stubn, just a few blocks from the hotel. It was a great !
On Sunday we went on a walking tour of the city. The German architecture is quite stunning. We worked our way up to the central Marienplatz Town Square where all the locals and tourists were mingling, enjoying a break from the past rainy days.
So it’s off to Vienna tomorrow – hoping the storm has subsided and the trains are back on schedule! Feel free to leave a comment below. If you wish to contact me, my email is blaisemcneil@gmail.com. Thanks for visiting my site and I hope you’ll return soon for my next adventure…. Blaise
