The sun is out in Portugal again! A recent article in The Portuguese News said the month of March was very rainy and cold with precipitation values 229% above normal. No kidding! Well, it can only get better I say (and it has been).
A recent day trip to Sagres included a nice bus ride, a walk along the cliffs and a fish lunch. Sagres is situated at the south westernmost corner of continental Europe on the great Atlantic. I had to go to Burgau first, which has a cool and highly photographed bus stop – complete with the red mail box. Honorable mention as well to ‘Café b’ for great coffee and awesome view.

The windy point of Sagres has a fortress that I had visited previously, so I explored the coast a bit on foot. There were a few surfers and beachgoers along the shore. The Algarve is a real draw for surfers!

I thoroughly enjoyed a lunch of fresh, grilled mackerel with boiled potatoes and a cerveja.

I did one more leg of the Fisherman’s Trail, this time a hike from my home base of Luz to Lagos, taking about 2.5 hours. The trail was dry, weather was warm and sunny, so it was a great day to strap on the boots and stretch the legs. After the big hill in Luz right at the start, the trail was quite manageable.

I have since moved up the coast a bit, now staying in Portimão – a medium-sized city with a population around 60,000-65,000 people. It has a good bus system for getting around town or visiting neighbouring Algarve towns, beaches and all amenities. Just across the bridge from Portimão is the picturesque, fishing village of Ferragudo. I walked over but after a swim, the bus back was an attractive option.
