Zagreb is a small, compact city consisting of an Upper and Lower Town. The thing that struck me about Zagreb was the extensive, frequent tram system that moves folks around. I wish Halifax would bring them back! We were able to catch trams to and from the train station – below is a shot of the trains entering the primary plaza – Ban Jelacic Square.
St. Blaise is the patron saint of Dubrovnik, Croatia but lo and behold there was the Church of St. Blaise in Zagreb. It was under renovation and was totally covered in tarps and staging but I was able to at least get a shot of the tower and the chapel at the front of the church.
Rick Steves’ trusty travel guide suggested a restaurant called La Štruck -serving up a tradition Croatian specialty called štrukli. I thought it might be similar to the dish we tried in Slovenia but it was quite different. Think lasagna, without the tomato sauce, cottage cheese (no it wasn’t gross!) with savory fillings. We split a salty cheese and an apple cinnamon štruckli and they were filling. It is neat to try the local dishes, apparently made in households all over Zagreb.
Upper Town had historic churches, shrines (primarily Catholic), museums and lookouts. It is all very walkable with plenty of eateries, pubs and bars. It was a very nice day spent in Zagreb.
It’s back to Ljubljana, Slovenia for a few more days then Florence, Italy next. Feel free to leave a comment below. If you wish to contact me, my email is blaisemcneil@gmail.com. Thanks for visiting my site and I hope you’ll return soon for my next adventure…. Blaise
