Making the Most of our Rare Snow Days

The Halifax area, in particular, has experienced warmer summers and less snowy, wintery days in the past few years. It is the first week of February and I can count on one hand the number of snowfalls we have had in the 2020-21 season. Maybe my late grandfather, Grandda we called him, was right when many years ago he predicted that the Nova Scotia climate would eventually be warm like the southern US (he was a smart man)! As a child, we had snow banks in our yard as high as the transformers hanging on the power poles. Not so any more!

With that in mind, I am looking forward to having a heat pump installed at my place in the vey near future in expectation of the another hot summer. Perhaps, based on my purchase, we will have the worst summer in years but we’ll see :).

I haven’t yet had an opportunity to get out my x-county skis or snow shoes yet, mostly just strolls around the city. I hear there is a good dumping of snow predicted in the next few days so I may get to dust them off soon.

Along the Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk, after a recent snowfall.

Point Pleasant Park, in the deep south end of the city is a great place for a walk or run, no matter what the season. It certainly looks a bit different in the winter though!

The cannons in Point Pleasant Park guard the harbour for us.

PP Park has no all-terrain vehicles or motorized vehicles of any kind. It is a great escape from the hustle and bustle (well, when there used to be hustle and bustle LOL) of the city.

I may be in the minority but I enjoy winter – quiet runs on the boardwalk when you have the entire place to yourself or cross country skiing in one of our provincial or federal parks. The Halifax Public Gardens is still open even in winter for us to enjoy.

The cold winter nights will not be around too long, so I try to enjoy them while I can.
